England were trialling a 3-5-2 formation but appeared shaky at the back, while strikers Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch both like to come deep and so never really threatened the Croatia defence. A long-range Rooney effort in injury time was one of few attempts on goal. England are top of Group E, but share seven points with Croatia, Macedonia and Israel. Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and substitute Kieran Richardson also played.

There was major disappointment for United's England contingent on Wednesday night as Steve McClaren's side slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Croatia in Zagreb.

Gary Neville scored a freak own goal as his backpass hit a divet and left Paul Robinson kicking air whilst the ball rolled into the back of the net.
