Carrick happy to score in

Michael Carrick was delighted to put the seal on a crucial victory for the Reds against Portsmouth which put Sir Alex's men three points clear of Liverpool at the league summit.

The substitute latched onto a fine through ball from Paul Scholes to drive home United's second goal which had somehow evaded them for the previous 73 minutes. The Reds had earlier gone ahead through Wayne Rooney's ninth minute strike, but United had to wait until the 82nd for final confirmation of a vital three points.

"The longer it went on at 1-0 the more they started to come into it," Carrick told MUTV. "They had a couple of oppportunities after the break and Edwin had to make a couple of good saves.

"We played some great stuff at times in the first half and some of the link-up play was brilliant. We had a number of chances to go further ahead and that would have put the game to bed. So it was a bit frustrating in that sense. We still played well and from a personal point of view it's always nice to score. It was a quite an important goal at that point so I was pleased to get it."

Despite being in the title race driving seat following Liverpool's dropping of two points against Arsenal on Tuesday night, Carrick maintains there is still hard work to be done between now and the season finale.

"Liverpool's draw was a big boost and we're in a decent position now," says the midfielder. "Hopefully we can keep the momentum going between now and the end of the season and put the league to bed as quickly as we can. There are big games coming up thick and ast and we need to be at our best in all of them."

Another nervous evening's work at Old Trafford, but goals at either end of the 90 minutes from Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick gave United three points against Portsmouth, putting clear daylight between champions and challengers in the Premier League title race.

A procession of chances came and went in-between the two strikes, meaning much of the evening made uncomfortable viewing even though United - and in particular the front pairing of Rooney and Ryan Giggs - often had Portsmouth chasing shadows.

After Sunday's FA Cup semi-final marathon against Everton, Sir Alex Ferguson made wholesale changes for the second successive game, with a string of big-name players returning. Two of them - Giggs and Rooney - combined sumptuously to put United ahead inside nine minutes.

Darren Fletcher, back from injury and on the lung-busting form of recent weeks, won the ball and it was quickly ferried forward to Anderson, whose excellent pass allowed Giggs to spring the visitors' offside trap. Waiting in the centre was Rooney, who finished with aplomb after a perfect rolled cross from his veteran colleague.

Amid the joy and release of any early tension, attentions switched to skipper Gary Neville, who sat stricken in his own half after sustaining a foot injury. After consultation with the club's medical staff, the club captain was promptly replaced by John O'Shea.

With the prospect of a three-point lead looming, United were clearly intent on also boosting a goal difference which had been overtaken by second-placed Liverpool in recent weeks, and the chances came thick and fast.

It was O'Shea who came closest to doubling the Reds' advantage before the break, as he headed Giggs' left-wing corner past James, only for Nadir Belhadj to smuggle the ball off the line and away to safety.

Next, a mis-timed header from Sol Campbell allowed Ronaldo to break down the right and cross low across the area for Giggs. His delicate chip beat James, but also drifted just past the far post. The 35-year-old held his head in his hands, aware that a glorious chance had just gone begging.

It looked like Giggs had made amends a minute later by feeding Rooney to round James and score, but a linesman's flag belatedly - but correctly - chalked it off. Quite how half-time came and went with United only one goal ahead was a mystery.

The fact that so many chances had come and gone seemed to increasingly play on United's minds as the second half unfolded. The Reds' cause wasn't helped when O'Shea suffered an injury after a clash with Belhadj, who appeared to stand heavily on the Irishman's foot. With the injury count rising but the goals tally stuck on one, a nervous atmosphere began to brew within Old Trafford.

The tension was never higher than around the 70th minute, when Pompey mustered two particularly threatening forays forward. Peter Crouch, who ploughed a lone furrow without much joy but with plenty of effort, first volleyed wide, then saw his header well saved by Edwin van der Sar.

Rooney saw another shot well saved by James after latching onto van der Sar's long punt, but a priceless second goal did finally arrive with eight minutes left. Carrick, thrown on at the expense of Anderson, came up with the goods and Scholes, fittingly on his 600th United appearance, was the architecht.

Just as he has done umpteen times in his 15-year senior career, the midfield magician exploited a gap before the Pompey defence were able to plug it by slipping an inch-perfect pass into the run of Carrick, who finished clinically into James' bottom-right hand corner.

With the three points assured, United began to press forward with more abandon, striving to make up further goal difference. Ronaldo had a goal chalked off and also fired over while Rafael was denied by James, leaving the Reds still three behind Rafael Benitez's men on that count.

More importantly, however, the telling gap between champions and chasing pack is now three points, with a game in hand still to make up.

Defeat hurts, but Reds move on

Nemanja Vidic turned in a Man-of-the-Match display at Wembley and scored in the penalty shoot-out, but that is of little consolation to the Serbian as the Reds crashed out of the FA Cup.

“We're disappointed because this is a trophy we wanted to win,” he told MUTV. “We played some good football and created chances, but in the end it came to penalties – and that’s just a lottery. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. In the Champions League final we won… but today we didn’t score our penalties. You have to congratulate Everton.”

Vidic dispatched his spot-kick with aplomb, even though it wasn’t enough to prevent a 4-2 shoot-out loss, but he says dealing with the pressure of converting from 12 yards is “nothing new”.

“I practise in training and I also took penalties for Red Star Belgrade and Spartak Moscow,” he said. “It’s nothing new, but there's always the possibility you'll miss, especially in games where there is pressure. I scored, but it’s not about me scoring. The team didn’t win. We need to forget this game now.

“We must take it and recover for the next game. It’s going to be hard, but we have Wednesday’s match against Portsmouth and we need to be focused. It helps that some players were rested. They are going to be fresh and I hope we have a good game at Old Trafford.”

Vidic was proud of the performances of four teenagers in United’s youth-inflected starting line-up. And he says it's the result, rather than the performance, which was frustrating. “We played well, so we don’t need to be disappointed about that,” he added. “We played offensively and tried to score. We had young players in our team, they showed some quality. We know they are capable of doing that. We just didn’t take our chances."

United are out of the FA Cup after a brave semi-final showing from a very young Reds team, losing 4-2 on penalty kicks at Wembley.

Ironically, it was Phil Jagielka, the man whose foul should have given United a second-half penalty, who scored the winning spot-kick after the two teams could not be separated in 120 minutes of entertaining football. It's Sir Alex's first FA Cup semi-final defeat and ends the chance of an unprecedented quintuple. However, Sir Alex's team selection suggests he has his sights set on the league and Europe.

It had been something of a gamble and there were raised eyebrows when United’s team-sheet was submitted an hour before kick-off, with eight changes from the side that beat FC Porto four days previously. The absentees all stayed in Manchester, though reports that a broken metatarsal would rule Wayne Rooney out for the rest of the season proved woefully wide of the mark.

The average age of the starting team was just 22, the line-up including four teenagers, and seven players aged 25 or under. Sir Alex insisted he couldn’t ask many of his players involved in a taxing battle in Portugal to go again on a heavy Wembley pitch – only Anderson, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic from the team that started at Estadio do Dragao survived. Few, however, could have predicted the boss’ team.

United’s fixture schedule is so hectic that Sir Alex had little choice than to shuffle the pack. Rafael and Fabio started for the first time together (in fact, the first time they’ve been on the pitch together in a competitive Reds match). There was also a first start for Federico Macheda – of recent Premier League match-winning fame. He started up front with Carlos Tevez. Danny Welbeck was deployed at left midfield, Ji-sung Park on the right, with impressive duo, Darron Gibson and Anderson, in the centre.

It would be difficult to argue that, individually, each of the starting eleven had not earned their Wembley opportunity through their performances this season; and it’s in keeping with the youth-first policy in the domestic cups this term. What the selection does suggest is that maximum importance is being placed on clinching the title.

The youthful Reds started very well in a very open game, with Macheda looking exceptionally lively up front. There were few signs of nerves in front of a record FA Cup semi-final crowd of 88,141, and United went closest to scoring first on 22 minutes, when Welbeck’s glancing touch from Rafael’s cross was deflected wide by Joleon Lescott. It coincided with a sustained period of pressure on Everton in the middle of the half.

Welbeck was again wide of the target five minutes before the break in one of United’s best moves of the half. After neat football down the left flank, Macheda slid a wonderful pass between Tony Hibbert and Phil Jagielka, but Welbeck’s shot was wayward. Although the critics will have been queuing up for a chance to criticise the manager’s team selection, the players did him proud in an encouraging 45 minutes, which, although lacking in goalmouth action, saw United control possession.

Everton started the second half with much greater intensity, Tim Cahill forcing a brilliant low save from a previously inactive Ben Foster shortly after the break. Everton were resurgent, and their fans urged them on. It was proving a test of character as much of talent for United’s youngsters. They responded well. With the game becoming stretched, the Reds countered and Park fired just wide of the post.

The Reds had regained control in what was becoming an engrossing game. Gibson was strike, fizzing a shot towards the top corner from 25 yards which Tim Howard tipped over. But the breakthrough should have arrived on 68 minutes when Welbeck was blatantly brought down by Jagielka in the box. Somehow Mike Riley adjudged the challenge to be fair. Sir Alex and the United players were understandably furious because that could, and should, have been the Reds’ chance to win it.

Anderson went close with a long-range effort as the game edged into the final fifteen minutes, while the increasingly involved Welbeck curled a shot just over the bar. Both teams patently wanted to end this tie inside 90 minutes. United made the best of the opportunities, but neither side could find the breakthrough as the match headed into extra time, with Dimitar Berbatov replacing Macheda.

Extra time offered few major incidents as both teams seemed settled on deciding this tie on penalties. Neither side could find the breakthrough, largely down to both team’s immovable defences. Jagielka and Lescott impressed, while Ferdinand was solid and Vidic was absolutely immense all afternoon.

It’s the fourth time United have been forced to spot-kicks in the last year (the Champions League final, Community Shield and Carling Cup final being the others), but this would be the first time the Reds tasted defeat. Cahill fluffed the first kick, blazing well over, but Berbatov also missed. Baines made it 1-0, an advantage upheld when Howard saved Ferdinand’s kick. Phil Neville converted, as did Vidic to make it 2-1. But Everton edged closer to the final when Foster could only get a finger tip to Vaughan’s kick. Anderson scored to level, but Jagielka grabbed the decisive goal to win the shoot-out 4-2.

Ferguson's side will now meet Arsenal

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Cristiano Ronaldo's wonder strike that delivered Manchester United a Champions League semi-final showdown against Arsenal.

Ronaldo's early 40-yard strike earned Ferguson's side a 3-2 aggregate victory as United became the first English side to win in Porto.

"It was unbelievable. A magnificent hit," Ferguson said. "It took them by surprise and the keeper had no chance.

"To do it at that point gave us a real platform to go into the game."

Ronaldo struck after six minutes and Ferguson, who became the first manager to reach a sixth Champions League semi-final, said the early goal was a huge bonus.

"We wanted to start the game quickly with good tempo ... but to get a start like that, no-one can expect it, no-one can expect that type of goal," added the United boss.

Ronaldo himself described the goal as the best of his career, admitting he could not wait to watch it again.

"It is the best I have scored," he said. "It was a fantastic strike and I can't wait to see it again on DVD. I am very happy with it."

Porto rarely looked like breaking through as United kept their first clean sheet since 11 March, having conceded 11 goals in their last five games.

And Ferguson, who was taking charge of his 150th Champions League clash, admitted Rio Ferdinand's return after a three-game absence had made a huge difference.

"Rio coming back was a major part of our success," said the United boss.

"He and Nemanja Vidic have a partnership that goes back three years. They have a great understanding of the game and there is a good balance between them.

"We defended very, very well and that was the key to it really, because if we get back to that foundation of not giving away goals then we can do well.

"They had to chase. That early goal had them on the back foot. I don't think they made any chances in the match."

United have now stretched their unbeaten run in the Champions League to 23 games, winning a second leg away from home for the first time since the 1999 semi-final triumph in Turin against Juventus.

"We tried to change and spread the team around the field and hope Manchester would make some mistakes," Jose Gomes, who replaced suspended Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira, said.

"We feel very bad. You can understand our emotions. We feel that wasn't a very just result. They scored one goal and it was scored by the best player in the world."

United's semi-final with Arsenal will be the first time they have met English opposition in a two-legged European tie.

Arsenal beat United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the season, and Ferguson is predicting another classic encounter.

"It would be tough no matter who we played but the fact it is another English side gives a different type of spice to it," said Ferguson.

"We are two good footballing sides, so it should be a terrific semi-final. Our game earlier in the season was fantastic. It was the way football should be played and we will look forward to it.

"The first leg is at home, so 1-0 would be perfect for us. But it is not going to be easy."

Boss: Defence was key to victory

Sir Alex Ferguson cited the welcome return of a solid foundation as United claimed a slender but significant victory in Portugal.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic earned much of his praise as they played 90 minutes together for the first time since the Reds overcame Inter 2-0 in the previous round of the Champions League - also the last occasion when United kept a clean sheet.

"I think the stability at the back, the recognition of Ferdinand and Vidic together is always a great start for your team," said Sir Alex in his post-match interview.

"There was a lot of good concentration at the back, the team defended very, very well and I think that was key to it really. If we can get back to that foundation of not giving goals away, then we can do well."

United had an aggregate lead to defend from as early as the sixth minute at Estadio do Dragao, thanks to a glorious goal by Cristiano Ronaldo - arguably one of the best of his illustrious career to date.

"It was unbelievable, a magnificent hit, absolutely fantastic," enthused Sir Alex.

"The shot took them all by surprise, coming from 30 yards or whatever it was. The goalkeeper had no chance really."

Reds marvel at Ronny's goal

United players were queuing up to praise Cristiano Ronaldo's wonder-goal after the sixth-minute strike secured a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Portuguese winger's rising right-foot rocket from long range (UEFA measured it at 39.6 yards) put the visitors in the driving seat by stunning the Porto players and supporters.

"It was an unbelievable strike," Michael Carrick told MUTV. "Just when we needed that spark and a bit of brilliance, Ronny's done it again."

Wayne Rooney enthused: "It was a wonderful goal from Cristiano to win us the game. It was brilliant and on such a big night for him too."

John O'Shea added: "The strike was sublime. He’s well capable of that and he nearly stuck another one in the bottom corner with a couple of minutes to go."

Ronaldo's goal was also heralded in both dug-outs. Porto's assistant coach Jose Gomes said his team could take heart from losing to such a shot: "We can be proud. We lost to the best team in the world, by a goal scored by the best player in the world."

Sir Alex Ferguson commented: "I’ll need to go into my memory bank to recall a better European Cup goal than that one. That was fantastic, a great, great strike. We wanted to show our intent but to get that sort of start, well, nobody can expect that sort of goal."

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Federico Macheda has "something special", while the young Italian striker's team-mates have accepted he is now a genuine option up front.

Rome-born Macheda clearly has an eye for the spectacular. Having come off the bench to score a stunning winner on his debut against Aston Villa, he followed it up with an instinctive touch to provide a 2-1 victory at Sunderland.

"He has got something special about him, the boy," admitted Sir Alex. "He's just got that instinct that goalscorers have. He has good movement and he's quick.

"He isn't fazed by anything, and he got involved as soon as he came on, he had a really good 20 minutes for us."

'Kiko' may still be in his teens, but Macheda offers a real threat as back-up to United's regular forwards.

"It's great to be able to bring on a young lad like that," says Scholes. "He scored with his first or second touch, he looks like a great goalscorer and there's hopefully more to come from him."

Reds goalkeeper Ben Foster likes the confidence Macheda has shown. "It's a fantastic story," he said. "It was an unbelievable goal last week and he’s done it again.
"He’s saying it was a deft touch into the corner but I don’t think many of the lads are believing him!

"But I'm really pleased for him. He’s thoroughly deserving of his chance because he's been doing it in the Reserves all season."

From relative unknown to overnight hero, it's a lot of attention to be heaped on his young shoulders. But he is an assured and confident young man and has the right people with the right intentions surrounding him.

"I think the players will help there," adds Sir Alex. "I had a chat with his family this week, so he'll be ok I'm sure."

"He's quite a level-headed lad, actually," adds Foster. "I don’t think any of the lads will let him get carried away – Gary Neville puts his foot down with anything like that."

A week ago, few outside of Old Trafford had heard of Kiko Macheda. After two vital winners in the space of six days, however, the 17-year-old Italian has been catapulted into a starring role in United's ongoing Premier League title defence.

While last Sunday's winner against Aston Villa was a piece of last-gasp artistry, this input at the Stadium of Light had a touch of fortune about it, but it was still enough to procure three priceless points after Kenwyne Jones had cancelled out Paul Scholes' opener.

Three points was all the Reds deserved, it has to be said, for a performance which was occasionally slapdash, but largely dominant against a Sunderland side severely lacking in confidence after a poor recent run of form.

Sir Alex Ferguson made a host of changes to the side which contested Tuesday's pulsating draw with Porto, with the return of Jonny Evans and Dimitar Berbatov from injury providing a welcome boost. Cristiano Ronaldo, involved in 20 of the Reds' previous 22 games this year, dropped to the bench for a well-earned rest. Scholes was included alongside Michael Carrick in midfield, and the veteran schemer ensured United were ahead by the interval.

Only a heroic block from Calum Davenport stopped the midfielder's 20-yard blockbuster testing Craig Gordon after nine minutes. Shortly afterwards, Scholes again found space in the area but opted to find Rooney, whose cross sailed over.

Djibril Cisse saw his shot deflected over as the hosts briefly rallied, but United looked by far the more likely to make the breakthrough. A minute later, Nemanja Vidic powered Rooney's corner goalwards, only for Danny Collins to scuff the ball off the line. From the ensuing scramble, the Serb sent an acrobatic overhead kick a yard wide of Gordon's goal.

The Reds weren't to be denied for long, however, and Scholes opened the scoring after 19 minutes. Berbatov held the ball up superbly before feeding Rooney, and his left-wing cross was clinically helped into the top corner by the experienced head of the diminutive midfield magician.

That took Scholes' career haul to 98 Premier League goals, but of far greater importance was laying the foundations for United to chalk up another three points. Having surrendered leads against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Porto with varying degrees of consequence in recent weeks, the need for a second goal was immediately apparent.

Plenty of possession ensued for United, but with few chances to show for their dominance. Inevitably, one or two jittery moments would follow as Sunderland grew in confidence; Djibril Cisse saw a shot palmed over by Foster and Jones headed straight at the England international, but the greatest scare came from a man in a red shirt.

Carlos Edwards shifted space away from Vidic before drilling in a cross from the right wing, and Evans could only watch and hope as the ball deflected off his shin, against Foster's far post and out to safety. Ji-sung Park then flashed an effort fractionally over Gordon's top corner, but United's interval lead remained a precarious one.

Within moments of the restart, Rooney thundered a magnificent 25-yard effort just past the top corner. The Reds would shortly be ruing that missed opportunity, and the concession of another sloppy goal. Tainio did well to fashion space down the left, and Foster failed to reach his teasing cross - giving Jones the chance to convert from close range.

The inevitable disappointment was scarcely tangible in United's approach, however. Scholes was within inches of restoring the champions' lead as his 20-yard snapshot arced agonisingly wide, while Tevez was thwarted by a combination of Gordon and his desperate defenders.

As time wore on, Ferguson decided to shuffle his pack with the introduction of Ronaldo and, shortly afterwards, Macheda at the expense of Park and Berbatov. Within a minute, the Italian had made another stunning impact.

Carrick's errant shot was heading wide as it entered a muddled cluster of home and away players, but spun away from Gordon and into the corner of the goal via Macheda's left instep. Deliberate or not - and he, a striker by trade, will tell you that it was - United had re-assumed a vital lead.

The goal took the wind out of Sunderland's sails. United, in desperate need of the three points to again overhaul Liverpool at the top of the table, clung on for grim life, seeing out the final 15 minutes in relative comfort - albeit with breath held, peeping between fingers for those packed into the away end.

Another nerve-wracking 90 minutes down, another three points. Watching United just wouldn't be the same without going through the wringer.

Park: Forget and move on

Ji-sung Park says the Reds must forget the 4-1 defeat and remember that the league title is still in United's hands.

Park was one of United's best players during the defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford. While he was disappointed with the result, Park and team-mates will only be looking forward.

"Obivously it's not a good result for us," he told ManUtd.kr. "But the league is not over and we're still top.

"If we produce good performances, like we have been doing, for the rest of our league games then this defeat will not be a big problem."

United now have a week to prepare before the next Premier League match away to Fulham on Saturday. It's a time for reflection, but not too much reflection.

“We don’t have a match until next weekend, so it’s good that we can take some rest and get ready to play Fulham," Ji added. "We must forget about this result, because next weekend I am sure we will be back with a good performance.

“We have about ten league matches left, so from now on it is really important that we win our games, and to win the title, we have to play well."

Serbians to join United

United is pleased to announce it has reached an agreement with Partizan Belgrade and the players for Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic to join the club.

Tosic, 21, will sign with immediate effect and wear the no.14 shirt, while an agreement is in place for 17-year-old striker Ljajic to remain with Partizan for the rest of 2009.

A press conference will be held next week, once the necessary paperwork has been filed with the relevant football authorities.

Sir Alex Ferguson gave his reaction to the signings at his Friday press conference and also confirmed United will not be doing any more transfer business in January.

"Tosic joins us immediately, his work permit is through; Ljajic will join us next year, " revealed the boss. "Tosic is a young wide left player. We like wide players at this club.

"We've been watching him for over a year. Our scout in that area has been telling us about him for quite a while. He's now a regular in the Serbian national team. Hopefully he does well.

"We'll give him time. He's not played since December 10 so he'll need time to adjust and get used to the tempo of our game and also the training.

"That's the end of the transfer business for Manchester United this season. There definitely won't be anything else in January."

Wayne hails 'best fans in the world'

Match-winner Wayne Rooney hailed United’s global following as thousands of Reds watched United become world-beaters against Liga de Quito both in the Yokohama International Stadium, on television and via ManUtd.com’s coverage.

“We’ve been amazed by the amount of fans over here,” he admitted after the game. “So many have travelled from England and there are also thousands here in Japan. We’re the best team in the world and they’re the best fans in the world.”

Rooney was ecstatic at scoring the goal that confirmed United’s position as the greatest team on Earth - his third goal in less than one and a half games.

“It’s fantastic, I was really happy to get the goal for us," he said.

"It’s a great achievement for us, and it’s something we’ve worked very hard for. We’re delighted to be world champions.”

United’s no.10 gave Liga de Quito’s goalkeeper Jose Cevallos a torrid evening, especially in the first half, but Wayne admitted the game was made a lot harder in early in the second period by Nemanja Vidic’s sending off.

“It was a really tough game for us after going down to ten men," added Rooney. "They had more possession but we defended well to win it."

Rooney is hitting top form at a great time for United and after receiving what looks like a giant key as FIFA's Man of the Match - he was also Player of the Tournament - Wayne will surely unlock more defences back in England. Opposition goalkeepers should expect an unhappy new year.

Carlos Tevez scored four times as Manchester United beat Blackburn Rovers 5-3 in a dramatic night at Old Trafford.

Tevez opened the scoring before setting up United's second with five minutes remaining in the first-half. He bundled home Ryan Giggs' far-post corner nine minutes from the break, then provided the pass that allowed Nani to grab number two shortly afterwards.

Blackburn threatened to make a comeback when Benni McCarthy scored just three minutes after the break, but the likelyhood of Paul Ince getting one over on his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson appeared to have been snuffed out by Tevez, who scored two quick-fire goals soon after.

Matt Derbyshire pulled one back for the visitors on 84 minutes, and McCarthy netted his second of the match in the second minute of injury time. Tevez scored his fourth of the match with seconds to spare to book United's place in the semi-finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for the second time in a Manchester derby, but Wayne Rooney’s first-half strike was enough to hand United all three points at Eastlands.

Ronaldo’s two yellow cards – the second for a bizarre deliberate handball – meant the Reds had to play the last 22 minutes with 10 men. But City didn’t threaten until stoppage time and United held on to claim a deserved derby-day win.

Sir Alex’s men controlled the game from start to finish, proving class and ability on the pitch counts for far more than wealth and ambition off it. Certainly, when City’s new owners took over in the summer, expectations in the blue half of Manchester rose astronomically. Almost immediately, the owners outlined a wish to win the Champions League within just three years. On the evidence of the 151st Manchester derby, however, City still have a lot of work to do.

Dimitar Berbatov made a surprise return to the Reds’ starting line-up after missing United’s last two matches with a hamstring injury. His inclusion alongside Wayne Rooney meant Carlos Tevez had to be content with a place on the bench.

Elsewhere, Ji-sung Park was given the nod ahead of Ryan Giggs and Nani on the left side of midfield, while 18-year-old Brazilian Rafael started at right back in his first Manchester derby. He showed little sign of nerves, darting down the wing early on to add an extra man to the Reds’ attacks.

It was from the right that United’s first real chance came, although it was Ji-sung Park and not the young Brazilian who fizzed the ball across the Blues’ box. It reached Rooney at the penalty spot, but the England international’s shot was straight at Joe Hart.

The Reds dominated possession early on and Ronaldo rose highest on 14 minutes to head narrowly over the bar from Wayne Rooney’s corner. Berbatov then drew a finger-tip save from Hart when he nodded Rafael’s cross towards the far corner.

United’s midfield four, commanded by Darren Fletcher in the middle, were first to everything, as City struggled to win – let alone keep – the ball. Fletcher and Berbatov linked well to release Ronaldo before the ball broke to Patrice Evra, who couldn’t keep his shot down.

Despite dominating, United almost went behind after 32 minutes. Van der Sar came a long way for a City free-kick and struggled to punch clear. With the Dutchman stranded, Stephen Ireland stabbed the ball goalwards from 18 yards. Micah Richards elected not to try and steer it in himself and in the end the ball bounced, almost in slow-motion, off the outside of the post and out for a goal kick.

It would have been cruel on the Reds, but the scare underlined how important it is to take chances in front of goal. And that’s exactly what Wayne Rooney did just before the interval, when his 100th club goal – his 83rd for United – put United in front.

City struggled to clear a bouncing ball inside the penalty area and when it broke to Michael Carrick the midfielder lashed a left-footed shot across Hart towards the far corner. The City goalkeeper did well to keep out the shot, but could only palm the ball to Rooney, who side-footed home from two yards.

The only surprise was that it took so long for the Reds to break the deadlock. Completely dominant in the first 45 minutes, United wouldn’t have been flattered had the score been 3-0 at the break.
Mark Hughes made changes at half-time, bringing Elano and Pablo Zabaleta on for Darius Vassell and Dietmar Hamann. The Blues were buoyed and Vincent Kompany went close from distance before Benjani found the side-netting after a quick counter-attack.

The changes allowed City to creep back into the game and the home team enjoyed more time on the ball. At the other end, Berbatov almost squeezed his shot past his marker before the game turned in City’s favour with Ronaldo’s dismissal.

Already on a yellow card after bringing down Shaun Wright-Phillips, Ronaldo went up for a corner and batted the ball away with both hands. He appeared to claim he heard a whistle and had thought the match had been stopped, but referee Howard Webb was unconvinced and showed the no.7 a second yellow card.

It was a bizarre incident – there seemed no other reason for Ronaldo to have gone with his hands – and forced United to reshuffle for the final 22 minutes. The Blues threw on striker Daniel Sturridge to bolster their attacking options, but failed to threaten van der Sar’s goal until stoppage-time when Richard Dunne had a shot cleared off the line.

The Reds then broke and almost made it 2-0 when Rooney tried to lob the retreating Hart from 40 yards. The goalkeeper made a fine save to deny Wayne on this occasion, but his first-half effort proved enough to clinch the points and wrestle back bragging rights for the red half of Manchester.

Wayne Rooney aims to fire United to a first win at the Emirates on Saturday.

Over the past two seasons the Reds have twice squandered match-winning positions at Arsenal, and Rooney is determined to avoid a repeat.

Rooney scored on both visits so far to the Emirates, but on each occasion Arsenal mounted dramatic late comebacks. In January 2007, Thierry Henry scored a rare headed goal to give the Gunners a 2-1 win and last season William Gallas scored seconds from the final whistle to secure a point.

“We’ve thrown away some points there in the last two seasons, despite them being really good games. I think we should have maybe won at least one of them,” he said.

“We know Arsenal are a good team, they pass the ball really well. They can make it difficult for you, especially at home, so we’ll have to make sure we’re focused, we all do our jobs right and try to get the goals to win it.”

Meanwhile, Rooney is confident United’s squad is equipped to cope with the strains of competing in multiple competitions, and says he relishes the hectic fixture list. “Since I’ve been at this club the games have been Saturday - Wednesday - Saturday - Tuesday. I prefer it that way. I’d rather play twice a week than only play Saturdays.”

United won with the minimum of fuss against West Ham, but this was still a performance very much to get excited about.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck both goals on a night he paraded his World Player of the Year award, while Dimitar Berbatov shone and Carlos Tevez, Nani, Anderson and substitute Wayne Rooney all showed glimpses of why this is one of the finest collections of players Sir Alex has ever had. There were plenty of tricks, flicks, skills and thrills to provide warmth as Manchester’s winter chill made an early appearance.

Sir Alex handed Carlos Tevez his first start in a month against his old club, as Rooney dropped to the bench, while there was no place for birthday boy Edwin van der Sar – he turned 38 today. He was replaced by Tomasz Kuszczak and Rafael was favoured at right-back ahead of Gary Neville and Wes Brown.

United set out with the same attacking intent that has markedly changed the Reds’ goal return in the past month; the first chance came in the third minute when Nani squared the ball to Berbatov, but Hammers skipper Matthew Upson got enough on the ball to deflect the striker’s shot over the bar.

Nani went close himself two minutes later after a neat move from the Reds. Darren Fletcher’s lofted pass was nodded into the Portuguese winger’s path by Anderson, and Nani’s first-time, left-foot shot flew narrowly past the far upright. Whether it had all come a little too easy to Sir Alex’s men in the opening exchanges, a short spell followed where red passes too frequently went astray, and players were caught in possession. But it didn’t last long.

Before kick-off Old Trafford paid tribute to Ronaldo as he collected his FIFPro World Player of the Year accolade on the pitch. So often last season Ronaldo provided the goals just when United needed them, so it was no surprise that he was the man to step forward. Nani was the provider, his centred ball across the penalty area finding his countryman free, and Ronny struck the ball left-footed past Robert Green.

United’s relentless forward march soon paid dividends with the second goal arriving 15 minutes before the break. It was a goal of sublime creation. Anderson’s channelled pass set Berbatov on his way, but with the ball tight to the byline the Bulgarian had precious little space to operate in. No problem. He stopped the ball with his left foot, pirouetted and flicked the ball over James Collins’ challenge with his right. Having skipped away it was a matter of squaring the ball across the six yard box for Ronaldo to slide in and grab his second of the night.

There was a palpable feeling of resignation among the away supporters as they ironically chanted “we’re going to win 3-2”, and it’s something that opposition teams have become accustomed to doing against the Reds: accepting that, at times, United are unplayable.

The second half started with the Reds comfortably in control; without any strong urgency to rack up a big score, but always displaying a desire to entertain, Berbatov in particular working through his full repertoire of languid yet awe-inspiring touches.

And if you think this article displays a lack of incident from Gianfranco Zola’s men, it’s simply that there was so little to report. It was all one-way traffic; exquisite football, at times carnival-like stuff, and West Ham had no response. Tellingly, a glance at the home bench showed Rooney and Ryan Giggs, among the Reds’ best performers in recent weeks, while Michael Carrick, Gary Neville, Ji-Sung Park, Ben Foster and John O’Shea provided further options perhaps only Chelsea can match.

Rooney and Carrick entered the fray with 20 minutes to go and West Ham hearts must have sank further still. Even Anderson was taking long-range shots from 30 yards.

Of course, the finest football does not guarantee trophies, but if United can perform like this throughout the season, the top honours will certainly be attainable - and there will be plenty of great football to look forward to along the way.

Wayne Rooney says he hasn’t changed his approach after scoring his third goal in three games to help United to an impressive 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers.

The 22-year-old Reds forward has been in fine form recently, scoring against Bolton Wanderers, Aalborg and now Blackburn. But Rooney defended his form at the start of the season by saying the only difference now is that he is finding the back of the net.

“Once you get your first goal of the season your confidence is sky-high. I’ve not really been doing anything differently,” he said after scoring the goal that clinched victory over Paul Ince's men.

“I’m not doing anything different to what I was doing at the start of the season. I’ve just been taking my chances – that’s the only real difference.”

Rooney’s performance – including his fantastic second-half top-corner strike – was arguably his most complete of the season so far. The same goes for United, whose fluid movement in attack was a joy to watch, particularly after the break.

“It’s a great result for us because it’s been a difficult place to come to in the last few years,” Rooney told Setanta Sports. “The conditions weren’t the best, it was raining heavily, but I thought we played well and deserved the win.

“We moved the ball well at times. We were confident in possession and getting the goal in the first half allowed us to pass the ball more freely in the second half. We knew we’d get the chances to finish the game off and we did.”

Edwin van der Sar was the hero as United were crowned champions of Europe for the third time after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Forty years after first winning the European Cup at Wembley in 1968, and 50 years since the Munich tragedy, fate played a big part as a dramatic Champions League final went to penalties.

After Cristiano Ronaldo had missed his kick for United, John Terry had the chance to win the cup for Chelsea, but the Blues skipper slipped on the run up and his penalty hit the post. After Anderson and Giggs, plus Kalou for Chelsea, then converted, Nicolas Anelka's sudden death shot was finally saved by van der Sar, sparking jubilant scenes among United’s rain-soaked travelling contingent.

Cristiano Ronaldo had given United a 26th minute lead with a header from Wes Brown’s cross in a first half which the Reds dominated. Carlos Tevez had two clear chances to put United 2-0 ahead, but his efforts were well saved by Chelsea keeper Petr Cech, who also denied Michael Carrick.

Chelsea gained a foothold in the game in the final few minutes of the first half, and equalised with almost the last kick of the half, when a deflected Michael Essien shot fell kindly for Frank Lampard, who beat Rio Ferdinand and Van der Sar.

The Londoners dominated the second half and Didier Drogba struck the post, before Frank Lampard did likewise in extra time. Ryan Giggs, making a club-record breaking 759th appearance for the Reds, spurned United’s best chance.

In the second period of extra time, Drogba was red carded for a slap on Nemanja Vidic, but despite the one man advantage, the Reds couldn’t make the breakthrough on a heavy pitch, and so the final went to that heart-stopping penalty shoot-out.

On the eve of the Manchester derby, Sir Alex Ferguson scooped his 20th Barclays Manager of the Month award, while Cristiano Ronaldo was recognised as the league's star man for January.

The Reds made a flying start to 2008, registering four league wins and two cup victories in January. Along the way, Sir Alex's men scored 16 goals and conceded just one.

Key to the United's success was Cristiano Ronaldo, who continued his remarkable scoring run. A goal against Aston Villa in the FA Cup preceded his first hat-trick in English football against Newcastle United. The 23-year-old then scored his 11th goal in seven games when his late strike saw off a plucky Reading effort at the Madejski Stadium, before his double against Pompey had everyone gushing.

“No goalkeeper in the world could have saved it,” beamed Sir Alex after the Portuguese winger's dipping, swerving free-kick. David James didn’t even try. In fact, he could only shrug his shoulders at Ronaldo’s near-baffling brilliance.

Ronaldo’s rich vein of form has taken his Barclays Premier League tally to 19 for the season and sees him leading the race for the Golden Boot award. The Barclays Player of the Month honour is just the latest recognition of his talent, and the third time he's picked up the award (he also landed trophies in November and December 2006).

Sir Alex last won the Manager of the Month accolade in February 2007.

Blue ready for inspired Reds

Manchester City captain Richard Dunne expects United to be galvanised by the extra significance of Sunday’s derby.

The game comes four days after the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, but Dunne does not believe the emotion of the occasion will inhibit the Reds come kick-off.

“The way United are playing it’ll probably spur them on,” the Irishman told United Review.

“They’ll want to pay their own respects by putting on a performance in honour of the Busby Babes. It’s up to us to try and make an impact.”

Dunne sees the game as a perfect opportunity for the city to unite and pay its respects to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

“It means a huge amount to the whole city. We have a chance for the two clubs of Manchester to come together and remember all who were lost. If everyone pays their respects it will set the players up for a good match to fit the occasion.”

Dunne has played in 12 Manchester derbies, tasting success four times, but it is nearly 34 years since the Blues won at Old Trafford - a dismal run the defender is desperate to halt.

“A win at Old Trafford is long overdue! Our away form hasn’t been great but a victory would be a great boost for our campaign.”

February 6 will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich air crash.

Flying back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, the team plane stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

Twenty-two of the people on board died instantly, while Duncan Edwards - one of the eight victims from the team - died 15 days later as a result of the injuries he sustained.

The tragedy is an indelible part of United's history, as is Sir Matt Busby overcoming his injuries to build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26), Geoff Bent (25), Liam Whelan (22) and Duncan Edwards (21) all died, along with club secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Tom Jackson, Don Davies, George Fellows, Archie Ledbrook, Eric Thompson, Henry Rose, and Frank Swift who was a former Manchester City player. Plane captain Ken Rayment perished, as did Sir Matt's friend Willie Sanitof. Travel agent Bela Miklos and passenger Tom Cable also died.

We will never forget.

Tevez FA cup doubt

Carlos Tevez is a doubt for Saturday’s FA Cup third round clash with Aston Villa after suffering an ankle injury against Birmingham City, but Wayne Rooney is expected to recover from a virus in time for the trip to the West Midlands.

Tevez got the goal that handed United victory over Villa’s city neighbours at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day, but a heavy challenge on his ankle means he is now a major doubt for the game.

“Carlos got a bad tackle on his ankle in the first half and the longer he played the worse it got,” Sir Alex told MUTV.

“We had to bring him off and we will assess him on Wednesday morning to see what damage there is. Obviously, he is doubtful for Saturday now.”

Tevez was carried off at the end of the game after being replaced by Louis Saha. Although the injury isn’t thought to be serious, he will have it checked by United’s medical staff.

But as the Reds embark on the business end of the season, Sir Alex will be keen to have the Argentina international back in action quickly. His strike against Birmingham, after a sublime one-two with Cristiano Ronaldo, was his 10th goal of the season.

Ronaldo Delighted With Double

Cristiano Ronaldo was delighted to fire United to victory over Fulham, but felt aggrieved not to complete his hat-trick after being denied a clear penalty.

The 22-year-old volleyed home brilliantly on 10 minutes and headed a second just before the hour to complete a 2-0 win for the Reds.

He looked likely to be handed a chance to seal his treble when he was brought down by Cottagers' stopper Antti Niemi after being put clean through on goal.

But referee Rob Styles opted instead to book Ronaldo for diving, much to the winger's bemusement.

"The ref took the decision and although I respect it, I don't have the same opinion," he told MUTV afterwards. "It's a penalty. If he watches the replay, he'll see that the keeper doesn't touch the ball.

"It's frustrating to get a yellow card for it, but that's the way football goes and sometimes referees make mistakes. I don't think he did a great job tonight, but the most important thing is the three points."

Ronaldo's goals were his 12th and 13th of the campaign and even though he missed out on sealing his first hat-trick for the club, he's more than happy with his current goals' ratio.

ROONEY READY FOR FULHAM

Wayne Rooney is back in full training and on course to be return against Fulham at Old Trafford on Monday.

The 22-year-old striker will make a welcome return after injuring his ankle in training before the 2-0 defeat of Blackburn earier this month.

United missed Rooney's potency in front of goal during the 1-0 defeat against Bolton at the weekend, but as the Reds look to get back to winning ways he is set to make a rapid comeback.

"Wayne's making good progress," Sir Alex said after United's 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday.

"He did some running last week and he has resumed training this week.

"We are looking at him making his comeback against Fulham."

Saha buoyed by start

Louis Saha was delighted to come through his first league start of the season against Blackburn Rovers unscathed after a long battle with a knee complaint.

Sir Alex Ferguson had planned to continue using the French striker in a bit-part role from the bench so as not to risk any further injury niggles.

But Wayne Rooney's enforced absence through an ankle injury saw Sir Alex include Saha in his starting XI for only the second time of the campaign, as the Reds ran out 2-0 winners over Mark Hughes' side.

"It has been such a long time since I was in the starting line-up and it felt good to be in there," Saha told L'Equipe. "I was in the starting XI against Roma, but that day I was not at my best.

"I took advantage of the Wayne Rooney injury, but that is why a whole squad is useful.

"It went smoothly against Blackburn. I won't complain about failing to score because the most important thing is the team won."

Wayne enjoys winning tonic

Wayne Rooney bounced back from his midweek woe with England to score two goals against Villa but insisted United's win was the real morale-booster.

"It's been a disappointing week for England but at United we've got a good run of form going," Rooney told MUTV.

"The main thing is we got the three points. We had seen all the results today before we played and we knew we had to win. It was a good professional performance today."

Rooney is pleased that his partnership with Carlos Tevez has started to work well.

"I can play as the one going in behind and looking for the ball, and he can do the same so we can switch," says Wayne. "It's quite easy to play up front with him, he's a great, intelligent player."

Rooney also admired how United's Premier League newcomers Nani and Anderson performed against Villa.

"They’ve come in today and done really well, a lot of people don’t realise how young they are," said Wayne.

"They’ve got great confidence and belief. I think they were great."

United's number ten could have capped a great day for himself with a hat-trick but his second-half penalty was saved by Villa's substitute goalkeeper Stuart Taylor.

"I take penalties in training and normally I just smash them," he added. "But I don't know what happened with that one."

Rio's respect for new signings

Rio Ferdinand is full of admiration for United's new signings after their less than ideal introduction to life at Old Trafford.

The Reds defender says injuries and suspensions to established players have not provided the best platform for Nani and Carlos Tevez, when they would have preferred to slide into a more settled side.

"It isn’t easy for the new signings to slot in, especially when there are a lot of injuries and the side’s a bit fragmented," said Ferdinand.

"It’s been a difficult period for them, but they’ve done well. Carlos’ movement, his know-how and his nous around the pitch have been very, very good.

"Nani’s the young player with huge potential. It’s fantastic for Nani, having come to a big club like United, to hit the target like that.

"In that respect he’s similar to Ronaldo, he can hit the ball so hard that as long as he hits the target he’s got a chance of scoring like he did today.

"Hopefully we're going to see a lot more goals like that in the future."

Febian Brandy struck the only goal of the game as United overcame Juventus to lift the prestigious Champions Youth Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

The diminutive striker hit his third goal of the tournament in the second half to finish as the Reds' joint top scorer - along with Sam Hewson - as Andy Welsh's side ended up worthy winners of the competition in its inaugural season.

Juve had only conceded one goal en route to the final, but had no answer to Brandy's strike in the 50th minute as he negotiated a way past two defenders and drilled a low effort home.

United's defence held firm throughout the rest of the game in relative comfort, as they held on to become worthy winners of the high-profile competition.

Having negotiated a route past Porto, Boca Juniors and Internazionale in the competition's group stages, United ousted Barcelona and Brazilians Flamengo before beating Juve in Sunday's showpiece final.

Sir Alex calls on Carlos

Wayne Rooney's injury woe will hand Carlos Tevez an unexpected debut in Wednesday night's trip to Portsmouth.

Hitherto United's only fully-fit striker, Rooney suffered a fractured foot against Reading and is likely to miss the new few weeks.

With Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in training, but without any pre-season action, Tevez will start the game at Fratton Park despite his own lack of match-fitness.

"Carlos will start on Wednesday against Portsmouth," confirmed Sir Alex at a press conference to unveil the Argentine. "I would have preferred to wait for the Manchester City - that would have given him a few more days' training.

"But for the forthcoming few weeks, he will fill the position Wayne would have occupied."

The United manager also played down suggestions of a knee-jerk foray into the transfer market to further bolster the Reds' striking department.

"With Wayne as well, we have four strikers so I am not looking at a situation where I have to add to that number," he said.

The Dutch stopper was United's match-winner, saving penalty kicks from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Philips.

"It's a great feeling," van der Sar told Sky Sports amid the Reds' celebrations.

"It's a little revenge for the cup final and also gives us a boost before the start of the league. I've never saved three penalties in a row."

Despite his heroics at Wembley, Van der Sar admits his record in shootouts is not the best.

"I was 5-2 down on penalty shootouts during my career, so this makes it 5-3," the 36-year-old said.

"I think we deserved the win – we played the better football and created more chances than them. Chelsea only had the one chance at the end of the first half.

Reds set for fixture changes

United fans will discover later this week which of the club's 2007-08 Barclays Premier League fixtures will be switched for live TV coverage.

Sky Sports and Setanta are set to announce their listings for the first half of the season, which will move some games away from their traditional 3pm Saturday slots.

Sky have four packages, while Setanta have two, taking over those previously occupied by Prem Plus pay per view.

Games on Sky will be switched to Sunday at 1pm and 4pm and Saturday at 12.45pm.

Games on Setanta will be switched to Saturday at 5.15pm and Monday at 8pm.

Under the terms of the television deal, fans can expect a minimum of five and maximum of 26 league games to be switched for television coverage across the season.

Supporters are advised not to book travel or accommodation for games until the finalised fixture list has been confirmed.

Ryan Giggs claims a refereeing mistake denied him the chance to become the FA Cup's most successful modern player.The Welshman seemed to be on the verge of his fifth winner's medal - one more than anyone since the 1800's - when he slid in to meet Wayne Rooney's cross in extra-time.Giggs made contact with the ball, only for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech to smother it and apparently deny the officials a clear view of whether it had crossed the line or not. However, the United winger was in no doubt a goal should have been given his way.

Ryan said: "I said to the ref, 'You saw it go over and the linesman saw it go over'. If we had got that goal we might well have gone on to win the game."
Cech admitted the ball had gone over his line but claimed: "It would have been a foul anyway.
"When I made the initial save the ball had not crossed the line, then Ryan Giggs slid in, kicked me in the face and pushed me further back."
As United captain in the absence of Gary Neville, Giggs had the dubious distinction of being the first FA Cup final skipper to lead his team up the 107 steps at the new Wembley, albeit to collect nothing but runners-up medals. But he insisted there was still plenty to feel positive about following a long, hard and - in the Premiership certainly - successful 10-month campaign.

Edwin van der Sar claims United's title-winning starlets have the ability to achieve legendary status at Old Trafford providing they push on from here.

The Dutch stopper is full of praise for his team-mates after beating Chelsea over the finishing line to seal United's ninth Premiership title under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But he is urging them to kick on and build on this season's achievements in the coming years.

"You do not become a legend overnight - you have to win things over a long period," insists van der Sar. "The players have shown their ability this season. Every game has been important for us and we’ve shown we have been up for every one.

"Every player selected for Saturday or Tuesday or Wednesday has had to perform and we have not had to carry any one.

"Chelsea were so well ahead in the previous seasons. But this season, we have been playing well enough to cope with anything that has been put in our way.

"The squad is well positioned to achieve something special," adds the 36-year-old. "It takes a long time to work towards something like this but now the team must go on.

"It is not just about winning something once but two or three times and that is the challenge."

Park ruled out of Roma trip

Ji-sung Park was the only unexpected absentee as United departed Manchester for Wednesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg in Roma.

The South Korean midfielder was not in the travelling party - he has a minor knee injury but should be available for selection when the Reds travel to Portsmouth on Saturday.

The better news is that Louis Saha and Darren Fletcher have flown to Italy. Sir Alex Ferguson had hinted that the pair would feature for the Reserves on Thursday night in order to gain match fitness, but they will instead bolster the senior squad in Rome.

Despite Saha and Fletcher's inclusion, the squad is still a far cry from the bulging ranks which travelled to France for the second round clash with Lille in February.

Only four defenders have travelled - John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand and Gabriel Heinze. Patrice Evra is still sidelined, alongwith Gary Neville, Mikael Silvestre and the latest injury victim, Nemanja Vidic.

Cristiano Ronaldo was in buoyant mood after firing United to victory over Middlesbrough and into the FA Cup semi-finals.

The Reds' winger netted his 18th of the season from the penalty spot after he was tripped by Jonathan Woodgate.

Middlesbrough's players were incensed by the decision, but television replays cleared showed there was contact.

“For me it is a penalty," insisted Ronaldo afterwards. I felt contact, that is why I slipped. He touched me. If he touches me I lose my movement and that is why I go down. He kicked me.

"Why when Cristiano is involved is it always political? Maybe some people don’t like me because maybe I’m too good."

The Reds now face a semi-final trip to Villa Park where they'll play Watford. With Wembley just one step away, Ronaldo is determined to help the team book their place at the stadium's opening showpiece.

"It'll be a difficult game but when you have a good team then you have a good chance to get to the final," he insisted.

"I feel confident. I’m in good form and the team is feeling good too. Hopefully we can make it."

Boss salutes battling Addicks

Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased to beat Charlton, but admitted he was surprised by the quality of the Addicks' display at Old Trafford.

Goals in either half from Ji-sung Park and Darren Fletcher sealed the points for United, but the visitors served up a few scares throughout the afternoon.

"It was hard work for three points," Sir Alex told MUTV. "There were periods when there was a stalemate about the game and you have to give credit to Charlton, I thought it was a really good performance by them.

"It was a surprising performance I must say, because when teams are at the bottom of the league they don't always have the confidence to play, and I thought Charlton did."

Alan Pardew's side almost drew level when Dennis Rommedahl's free kick was flicked fractionally wide of Tomasz Kuszczak's goal, shortly before Fletcher clinched the victory.

The Boss reflected: "They had a free kick that was glanced on and it must have missed the post by a matter of inches. And these are worrying moments because 1-0 means nothing really, you can lose a goal in a second.

"The one good thing was that I thought we did defend really, really well today. That's one of the best in quite a while."

Park and Fletcher replaced Michael Carrick and Cristiano Ronaldo for United, while Kuszczak replaced broken-nose victim Edwin van der Sar.

The opportunity to field those fringe players was a major plus point for the Gaffer, with only 11 games remaining in the Premiership season.

"That's why you've got a squad," he said. "I keep stressing the point that the more miles we get on the clock of our pool players, it's going to benefit us at the right time of the season.

"I think we're playing well enough, I don't think we should always be looking over our shoulders. We should start looking forward ourselves and look at the exciting games ahead."

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Louis Saha can fire United a step closer to the title on Sunday at White Hart Lane after recovering from a knee injury.

The Reds' striker has been in and out of action in recent weeks, and missed the 2-1 FA Cup win over Portsmouth and the 4-0 Premiership victory against Watford with a minor knock.

However, the 28-year-old has come through a week's training unscathed and will be part of the 22-man squad for Sunday's crucial clash with Spurs.

“Everyone is fit, all 22 players. Touch wood it stays that way,” said Sir Alex at his pre-match press conference. “Louis has trained all week and has been in full training since Wednesday. He will travel with us for Sunday’s game.

"A goal threat will improve our [title] chances and Louis adds to what we've got. He's an excellent striker and I'm glad he's back."

The tie will take place over the weekend of 17 and 18 February.

The clash will be the eleventh FA Cup meeting between the pair. United have won five of the previous ten Cup games (losing only one), the most recent being the 3-0 win in January 1996.

That day goals from Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and a stunner from defender Paul Parker sealed victory.

The pair have already met twice this season. The first game at the Madejski Stadium in September ended 1-1, while the return match at the end of last year resulted in a 3-2 win for the Reds.

Sir Alex Ferguson was philosophical in defeat following Arsenal's smash and grab 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium, insisting all champions must overcome disappointment.

The Reds' boss saw his side go down to two late goals from substitute Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry, who headed the winner in the last minute of stoppage time.

"Both of ourselves and Chelsea will drop points. It is the name of the game. But how we cope is important," insisted the United manager. "Only true champions can come out of such disappointments and show their worth and I expect us to do that. We are still six points clear and we mustn't forget that."

The result prevented United from moving further ahead of nearest challengers Chelsea, who lost 2-0 at Liverpool on Saturday. Nevertheless, Sir Alex remained upbeat after the game and says lessons will be learnt from the experience.

"There is big disappointment in the dressing room but when I look at things now I think the result and the experience of losing so late will be good for us," he explained.

"We have some important away games to come at places like Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City, and if we get into that winning position again we won't be making mistakes like we made today again - I can tell you that for sure."

The Reds took the lead on 53 minutes through Wayne Rooney, who recorded his first headed goal of his United career. The visitors led for the next half an hour before van Persie pounced for the equaliser and Henry struck the final blow.

"We've lost two goals from positions where we didn't think we'd lose them," admitted the Sir Alex. "But that's football.

Sir Alex Ferguson says that even selecting United’s substitutes bench has become a dilemma – but one of his greatest challenges is choosing the team’s strike-pairing.

Louis Saha (12 goals) and Wayne Rooney (eight) have been his preferred choice for much of the campaign. But with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer possessing the most clinical record (nine goals in 17 games) and Henrik Larsson already making his mark, the United boss has a tough decision on his hands every week.

Not that they are sole contributors to the scoreline; 13 others have chipped in this season, while winger Cristiano Ronaldo is top scorer on 13. For Sir Alex, the potential for goals in attacking positions has summoned memories of United’s Treble season, and the quartet of Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Solskjaer.

“My thoughts go back to our Treble year with no doubt in my mind that the key to our success in 1999 on three fronts was the fact that we also had four top-class strikers,” the Reds boss wrote in his United Review programme notes.

“I was able to vary my selections and keep our attack fresh and firing on all cylinders with each of them making a telling contribution as we went quickly from one competition to another, especially in the closing stages when the games arrived thick and fast.”

Talk of repeating the feat of 1999 is hugely premature, but despite that the United boss will not refine his team’s ambitions to one competition. “Hopefully, with four strikers available now, we will be able once more to keep the goals coming in the Premiership, the FA Cup and soon in Europe,” he adds.

Ole pays tribute to Larsson

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims Henrik Larsson is Scandinavia's greatest footballing export since legendary Danish midfielder Michael Laudrup.

The Swedish striker enjoyed a superb goalscoring debut against Aston Villa, prompting Solskjaer to draw the flattering comparison with former Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Ajax star Laudrup.

"Henrik Larsson is the best player we have had in Scandinavia since Michael Laudrup," he told Aftenposten.

"He continues to get better, and it was important for the manager to see what kind of shape he was in because he hadn't played for a while. I do not think he was disappointed."

Larsson's dramatic United bow sparked rumours that he could extend his loan to the end of the current campaign, while the Swedish FA are trying to tempt him out of international retirement.

Swedish FA chairman Lars-Ake Lagrell told Aftonbladet: "There have been talks with Henke. I cannot say exactly what these discussions involved.

"Obviously it would be fantastic news if Henke decided to play for the national team again. But I'm not so sure - I think Henke has made his mind up for definite this time."

Boss rues missed chances

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted after United drew 2-2 with Newcastle at St James’ Park that his side should have come away with three points after "creating enough chances to win five matches".

At 2-1 early in the second half the only additions to the scoreline looked like coming from the Reds. But the Magpies hit back with a deflected strike from teenage defender David Edgar.

However, despite the dropped points, Sir Alex isn’t too concerned about the implications the result could have on the title race.

“There will be points dropped by both teams,” he told Sky Sports. “There is a real challenge for the championship now. Chelsea are not getting it all their way as they have done in the last two years. We are serious contenders.”

Analysing the match, he added: “We had three cleared off the line, that’s a bit unlucky, and Ryan Giggs, Louis Saha and Ji-sung Park all had good chances. When you are creating chances you would hope you do enough to win, and we should have won the match with the opportunities that we had.”

The United boss was full of praise for Glenn Roeder’s players, who never gave up the cause. “I don’t think we played as well as we have done in recent weeks simply because Newcastle didn’t allow us to play," he added.

"They wanted to be first to every ball, showed determination and character. I’ve got nothing but praise for them. We missed a stack of chances but I have got to admire the spirit and determination of the Newcastle team. They deserved their point without question. Latics boss lauds star duo

Paul Jewell paid tribute to Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo after the young pair conspired to bury his Wigan side on Boxing Day.

Ronaldo scored twice within four minutes of his half-time introduction, while Rooney was outstanding throughout the Reds' 3-1 win.

Although the England striker was frustrated in front of goal, it was his all-round contribution which caught Jewell's eye.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is brilliant," said Jewell. "Not only is he quick, he is also a fantastic footballer. He is good in the air and he lifted the crowd.

"Rooney was amazing as well. We had a three-on-one situation when he got back to clear. The lad does not know the meaning of the phrase 'lost cause'."

Having faced United and second-placed Chelsea in the space of four days, Jewell admits this season's title race will go right to the wire.

"It will be a dead heat," he predicted when asked which side he thought would ultimately prevail as champions.

"Today Manchester United were better than us in all departments. They are a brilliant team, who play magnificent football.

"We plugged away in the last 20 minutes but United had taken their foot off the gas."

Scholes delighted by volley

Paul Scholes reckons his volley in the 3-0 win at Aston Villa is better than the goal he scored direct from a corner at Bradford nearly seven years ago.
At Bradford in March 2000, the United midfielder fired home a scorching volley direct from a David Beckham corner. His thunderbolt at Villa Park was just as impressive, and accoring to the man himself, possibly better than his previous effort.
"I knew I'd hit it well and I was just happy to see it go in off the underside of the bar," he told MUTV. "I'd probably say it's better than my goal against Bradford.
"They always look a bit better when they go in off the underside of the bar like the Villa one did!"It's certainly up there [with my best goals]. I found myself in quite a lot of space during most of the corners we had in the game so I was waiting for one. Thankfully one came.
"It's great to be back amongst the goals - it's been a while since I've scored [against Liverpool in October]," he added. "I haven't scored as many goals as I would have liked this season, so hopefully this goal can start me on a run."

Scholes was also full of praise for his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo who bagged a brace in the Villa victory.

NIGEL Reo-Coker answered Alan Curbishley's call to do his talking on the pitch by grabbing the winner in the West Ham manager's first game in charge.

Skipper Reo-Coker, who has suffered a slump in form this season and has been linked with a move from the club, scored the only goal at Upton Park against Barclays Premiership leaders Manchester United.

United's lead at the summit had been cut to two points following Chelsea's win earlier in the day, and they were denied by a polished performance from goalkeeper Robert Green.

Green kept the hosts in the game with a stunning save to deny Cristiano Ronaldo in the second half, and Reo-Coker's near-post finish meant a triumphant start to Curbishley's reign.

Curbishley, who grew up in nearby Canning Town, had promised to select his starting XI on what he had seen in training since his appointment on Wednesday.

As a result Carlos Tevez, the Argentina striker who has not broken his Hammers duck, was on the bench and there was no place for his compatriot Javier Mascherano in the squad.

Curbishley also stated he had not spoken to Reo-Coker about his role at the club, but the skipper weighed in with the goal that gives his side renewed hope as they battle against relegation.

Curbishley had not beaten United during his 15 years as Charlton boss, and the early signs were that the visitors were not in the mood to hand him a victory to complement the rapturous welcome he received before kick-off.

With Chelsea defeating Everton at Goodison Park earlier in the day, United knew they needed a win to keep the pressure on the champions.

Ryan Giggs had a shot blocked in the opening 30 seconds and Wayne Rooney volleyed over early on when Michael Carrick, the former Hammers midfielder, fed him the ball on the edge of the area, but the hosts weathered the early storm.

Half-chances went begging for United and the hosts almost snatched an early lead when Matthew Etherington was found in front of goal by Lee Bowyer with a cross from right, but the winger could not direct his header.

Marlon Harewood also fizzed a volley over the crossbar in the 17th minute as the hosts built a little bit momentum.

However, Hammers goalkeeper Green was forced to parry Louis Saha's low effort from the edge of the area after the France striker went on a run from the halfway line.

Green stopped Saha twice towards the end of the first half but none of the chances were as clear as the opportunity Bobby Zamora spurned just after the half-hour mark.

Jonathan Spector's long ball looped over Rio Ferdinand, Zamora held off the defender but Edwin van der Sar managed to claw his effort away.

United, who had full-back Gabriel Heinze booked in the first half, then went on the counter-attack but Green was equal to their effort on goal.

Ronaldo earned a free-kick three minutes into the second half and Green recovered after fumbling the 40-yard set-piece from the Portugal winger.

Ronaldo then came even closer. He was denied by a stunning save from Green in the 56th minute after he cut in from the left following a slack pass from Harewood which allowed Rooney to start an attack.

Paul Konchesky drilled an effort wide at the other end just before Zamora was replaced by Teddy Sheringham, a Champions League winner with United, in the 59th minute. Referee Phil Dowd then turned down two penalty appeals against Anton Ferdinand, the first for handball from Saha's cross and the second for a challenge on Nemanja Vidic.

Yossi Benayoun was brought on for the final 20 minutes, replacing Hayden Mullins.

Reo-Coker netted his winner with 15 minutes remaining, finishing at the near post after Harewood had held the ball up on the byline and squeezed his cross in.

Adu leaves United for Real

American soccer star Freddy Adu, who recently spent two weeks on trial with United, has left his club DC United to join Real Salt Lake.

The 17-year-old midfielder, who can’t play outside the US until his 18th birthday on 2 June next year, scored 11 goals in 87 appearances in the capital, and is excited with his move.

"I couldn't be happier to be here," Adu said. "It is something I wanted. They've worked so hard to get me here and I appreciate that. This sort of has the same feeling as when I first came into the league. I feel reborn."

Real Salt Lake chief executive Dean Howes was equally delighted. "This is an exciting day for our club," he announced. "Freddy is one of the most recognised names in American soccer. He instantly makes us a better team on the field and will raise our level of awareness off it."

Ghana-born Adu has been linked with a move to Europe when he turns 18 but Real Salt Lake general manager Steve Pastornini has urged him to stay in the MLS. "(Adu) has a contract with MLS right now. MLS has the option to, on our side, extend it through the end of the 2009 season," said Pastorino.

"Stay right here Freddy - our new stadium in Sandy would look so much better with you at the centre circle on opening day on July 4, 2008, and we are thinking that far ahead as Freddy being a part of our team. Freddy's a dynamic, brilliant young player who's going to have some opportunities overseas. We just hope that we can postpone those a little while and that you can bring a couple of championships here to RSL first before you go anywhere."

UNITED regained the bragging rights after an open and entertaining Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

First-half goals from Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha put United in control, but City never stopped battling and Hatem Trabelsi's strike after 72 minutes gave them hope.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo settled matters with six minutes remaining and the Blues' misery was compounded when Bernardo Corradi was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Having already established a six-point lead over a Chelsea side who face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, there was much more than just local pride at stake for Ferguson’s men.

City made their intentions known from the start as Joey Barton clattered into Ronaldo in the opening seconds.

It was the type of treatment Ferguson has long lamented and, given Barton escaped with a warning, it was a little surprising Ben Thatcher was booked for merely blocking off the Portugal winger a little later on.

By that time though, Ronaldo had already played a major role in giving United the flying start they craved.

Possession

A major criticism of the youngster is his failure to spot an early pass. No such allegation could be made against him on this occasion though as he seized possession by the right touchline and instantly spotted Rooney unmarked inside the City box.

The cross was accurate but Sylvain Distin should really have cut it out.

Instead, the ball rolled underneath the Frenchman’s outstretched leg, straight to Rooney, who gleefully drilled home his eighth goal of the campaign.

He might have had a second not long afterwards too as he strode on to Saha’s through ball.

This time, Distin was fully alive to the danger and used all his pace to get back and deny the England man a shooting chance.

It was the kind of last-ditch defending City had to do on more than one occasion, yet, despite the speed of United’s attacking play, the visitors enjoyed just as much possession with Barton, turning out despite a recent family bereavement, impressing.

Twice they might have equalised thanks to the prodigious talent of Micah Richards.

Unfortunately for the Blues, on the first occasion, when the 18-year-old won two separate headers inside the United box, Richards was wide of the target. On the second, Richards might have found the net had Georgios Samaras not stopped the ball with his back to goal barely two yards out before turning and scooping his own shot over.

It proved to be a costly miss as United extended their lead before half-time when Blues skipper Richard Dunne was robbed of possession close to his own box.

Ricochet

Instantly, Gabriel Heinze swept the cross into the City box, allowing Saha to bundle home with the aid of a ricochet off Nicky Weaver and the underside of the bar.

Given City’s dismal scoring record this term, it should have been game over. It certainly appeared so for most of the second half as United dominated.

The hosts had another keeper as Andreas Isaksson, dogged by injury since his summer arrival from Rennes, was handed his debut as Weaver succumbed to a blow he picked up trying to keep out Saha’s goal.

Isaksson got plenty of chance to show City boss Stuart Pearce what he has been missing, three times denying Rooney alone, the latter effort a superb point-blank stop after Ryan Giggs - on his historic 688th appearance - had picked him out with a far post cross.

The value of Isaksson’s efforts became apparent when Trabelsi, shown inside by an unsuspecting United defence, let rip with a thunderous 20-yard shot Van der Sar had little chance of keeping out.

All of a sudden, even though Richards was forced out of the battle with a serious-looking injury, there was an obvious state of nervousness among the United team, not helped by the fact that six minutes before City had scored, Ferguson had replaced Saha with John O’Shea, leaving Rooney and Ronaldo as their only attacking outlet.

The Red Devils lived on the edge until redemption arrived when Rooney turned onto Gary Neville’s pass, then driving over a cross that flicked off Dunne, straight into the path of Ronaldo, who finished off from close range.

MUCH-CHANGED Manchester United took another stuttering step forward in their bid to land the Barclays Premiership title but the manner of their win over Everton left lingering question marks over the depth of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the Red Devils in front before the break, before Patrice Evra, with his first for the club, and John O'Shea netted to maintain a three-point lead over Chelsea.

But the decisive scoreline could not mask the lacklustre nature of some of United's play and the imbalance in Ferguson's side at the final whistle only emphasised the desperate requirement for striking reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Not that Ferguson will be too bothered, getting the victory he wanted - in a fixture United have not won for the past two seasons - after being able to give some of his key men a rest ahead of Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough and next week's make-or-break Champions League encounter with Benfica.

With the Neville brothers lining up as opposing captains, Wayne Rooney playing against his old club for the first time since Everton manager David Moyes launched legal proceedings against the striker and Ferguson's numerous changes, there were plenty of sub-plots.

One more emerged in the build-up to kick-off as rumours circulated of a bust-up between Ryan Giggs and Ferguson, which was said to have been triggered by the Welshman's contribution to Chelsea's equaliser at Old Trafford on Sunday.

That Giggs did not even get to celebrate his 33rd birthday on the bench only fuelled the gossip, until that is, he emerged in the directors' box, laughing and joking, showing no sign of a recent hairdryer blast.

SIR Alex Ferguson has reported a clean bill of health for Manchester United's clash with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Skipper Gary Neville has come through training and suffered no reaction to a calf problem while Cristiano Ronaldo is fit despite picking up an ankle injury at Blackburn last weekend.

Wayne Rooney bagged his first international goal for a year as England earned a 1-1 draw with Holland in Amsterdam.
The Reds' striker, whose last goal for his country came against Argentina in Geneva 12 months ago, struck on 37 minutes, but Rafael Van der Vaart's late equaliser denied England a deserved victory.

Reds Aim To End Dismal Run At Ewood

United travel to Ewood Park to face Blackburn this weekend, intent on ending an unwanted winless run in visits to the Lancashire club.

It has been over eight years since United registered an away League win over Rovers; six games have passed since the Reds' 3-1 win in April 1998.

Although United did win in the 2003 League Cup semi-final at Ewood, Rovers' recent record against United is as good as anybody's. Last season they registered a first league double over the Reds in 75 years.

Manchester United have been sensationally dumped out of the Carling Cup by Southend.

A Freddy Eastwood free kick put the Essex side ahead.

The bottom-placed Championship side then faced sustained pressure from the Premiership leaders.

But despite fielding a strong side, including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex Ferguson's men were unable to reply and went out 1-0. There were joyous scenes in Essex as fans watched their struggling side progress to the quarter finals.

Newcastle eased the pressure on Glenn Roeder by beating Watford on penalties.

The Magpies led early on through Antoine Sibierski, but Damien Francis put Watford level to force extra time. Watford then went in front through Danny Shittu on 108 minutes.

Scott Parker levelled the scores and the Tynesiders progressed 5-4 on penalties.

Sir Alex Ferguson had known from the beginning that a draw would be enough to ensure that his Man Utd side progress to the next round in the Champions League but ex-Aston Villa player Marcus Allback had other ideas as he bundled in the winner to keep Copenhagen’s slim hopes alive while condeming United to their first defeat in Europe this season.

The atmosphere in the stadium was almost similar to one you would see in Moscow, it was cold and there was snow falling down from the sky as the host opted to open the stadium’s roof instead of clsoing it and preventhing the elements from coming in, it’s a little strange, why build a retracable roof if you don’t use it when you have the chance to?

Anyway, United they field Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Louis Saha as Wes Brown, Darren Fletcher and Ole Gunnar took their place respectively while Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Patrice Evra were also rested with Silvestre, O’ Shea and Heinze coming in for the trio, so it was a total of six changes to the squad that had won 4-0 against Bolton on the weekend.

The stage was set for a Man Utd victory but FC Copenhagen obviously didn’t read the script as they pushed United from the first whistle.Rooney and his mates seemed contended to soak up the pressure and the likes of Silvestre, Vidic and Heinze were got a game on their hands as the home team tried to tear apart a resilient United defence.

Sir Alex realized this fact and brought on the experienced Rio Ferdinand for Vidic and replaced the recovering Heinze with Patrice Evra, yet United still fell behind as Allback scored Copenhagen’s first ever goal in the Champions League proper.

Bad news for United was besides losing their 100% record they also lost Ole Gunnar Solksjaer who appeared to be suffering from a hamstring injury and maybe the slight good news is that Celtic lost 3-0 to Benfica which means their hopes of qualifying is a little more brighter.

News emanating from the oh so reliable Sun camp suggests that Gabriel Heinze is a loan target for Paris Saint Germain this morning. According to The Sun Heinze has been marginalised by the fantastic performances of Patrice Evra this season.

Let’s dissect this story and see if there is any truth in it whatsoever. Firstly Heinze has not been marginalised by Evra’s fantastic performances. Yes Evra has played very well this season and all credit to him, but Heinze has been injured for the majority of games, therefore he has not been marginalised.

Secondly Real Madrid were interested in the Argentinean as little as a month ago. At that point Heinze came out to the press and said that he wasn’t going anywhere as he wanted to repay the loyalty of the club and manager that has stuck by him through his injury. If he says no to Real Madrid I get the sneaky feeling he may say no to Paris Saint Germain!

Thirdly he is loved at Old Trafford and has started all games he has been available for. Moving back to Paris Saint Germain would be a step in the wrong direction for a player at his peak in terms of footballing ability! All in all my feeling is Heinze is going nowhere!

In other news Gary Neville has earmarked the game against Chelsea on 26th November as a defining point of the season. We all know that this is a six pointer and is vital that we take the three points to edge out a lead against Chelsea in the league! We are much stronger than last season and we beat them 1-0 at home, there is no reason why we can’t do it again!

Finally another word on Copenhagen tomorrow. We must field a good side that is looking for victory! Now is not the time to sit back and play for the draw. It is not our style and never has been. UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed his side's 3-0 Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen had shown the players were keen to avoid any more "embarrassments".

The Red Devils failed to qualify for the group stages last season after defeat by Benfica in Portugal and Ferguson has drilled into his players that it cannot be allowed to happen again.

Paul Scholes put the home side ahead in the 39th minute before John O'Shea (46) and Kieron Richardson (83) put the result beyond doubt.
"I think they have proved themselves," said Ferguson.

"They have grown up. They don't want any more embarrassments and they played well into the bargain."

The Scot also had praise for England striker Wayne Rooney, who was handed the captain's armband after Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs were late withdrawals.

"I thought he was fantastic. It is always difficult choosing captains and I looked at Edwin van der Sar but it is never the most important issue," he said.

Ferguson added: "It was a good attacking performance.

"We had to make sure the pace of the game was quick and it think it was a good performance and a good result.

"I said at half-time we had to kill the game off. We should have done it in the first half with the opportunities we had."

England were trialling a 3-5-2 formation but appeared shaky at the back, while strikers Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch both like to come deep and so never really threatened the Croatia defence. A long-range Rooney effort in injury time was one of few attempts on goal. England are top of Group E, but share seven points with Croatia, Macedonia and Israel. Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and substitute Kieran Richardson also played.

There was major disappointment for United's England contingent on Wednesday night as Steve McClaren's side slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Croatia in Zagreb.

Ryan Giggs has one aim in mind during the next week: getting back to full fitness and helping United maintain a winning consistency when the rest of the squad return from international duty.

Giggs hasn't played for United since injuring his hamstring in the Champions League win over Celtic.

The 32-year-old winger, who was this week voted Welsh player of the year, is not involved in Wales' Euro 2008 qualifiers due to the injury, but he will be hoping to play some part in United's next three against Wigan, Copenhagen and Liverpool, where he hopes United can continue where the Reds left off against Newcastle.

"We just need to keep building on these results," he said. "We started well and obviously stuttered for a couple of games but finished off really well before the international break with a good win against Newcastle.

"We hope to start when we get back from the internationals where we left off. I think the first game we clicked, but after that we just dug out results, which is pleasing, but we can play a lot better. We know that, but we will probably have to if we are going to do well this year."

Saha may play for France

Louis Saha has not been ruled out of France's Euro 2008 qualifier against Scotland on Saturday, despite concerns over his fitness going into the tie.

The 28-year-old striker missed United's 2-0 win over Newcastle with a groin injury, which was still giving the Frenchman problems when he joined up with the national squad at Clairefontaine this week.

But national coach Ramond Domenech has not given up hope that he will be able to play in the match.

"For the moment, Louis is not ruled out," he said. "He is with us and I will see over the next day or two what kind of state he is in. We will see how it develops. We still have some time."

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already registered his concern about the striker's fitness, and has asked France not to risk the in-form front man if he is not fully fit.

At the end of 2005, United were so concerned by the knee problems that had ruined almost three years of his career, that Sir Alex Ferguson admitted the club was considering arranging a farewell testimonial.

Goals at any level seemed a distant and unlikely prospect - let alone a bagging vital double in front of his own adoring fans to send the Reds back to the top of the Premiership.

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer netted twice as the Red Devils brushed aside the challenge from Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Not since April 2003 has Solskjaer found the net in league combat at the Theatre of Dreams but the 33-year-old showed all his old instinct to put the Red Devils ahead before half-time before sending Nemanja Vidic's volley looping into the net two minutes into the second period.

So poor were the Magpies, the only disappointment for United, aside from an injury to Gabriel Heinze, was their failure to score more often.

Louis Saha's superb strike, aided by a slight deflection, made sure a hot-and-cold Reds display yielded three points and gave Sir Alex Ferguson's side further breathing space at the top of Group F.

Last December United exited European competition with a whimper, beaten 2-1 at the Estadio Da Luz and dumped to the bottom of what had seemed an easily navigable group.

The ghosts of that night have been laid to rest to some degree, with Sir Alex true to his pre-match word that there would be a different outcome this time.

There were periods, however, when it was easy to doubt his prediction. There's no denying that United were fortunate to be level at the interval.

Transfer Rumours: Sept 06

The transfer window has only been closed a matter of weeks, but already United are being linked with a host of new signings.

While interest in Owen Hargreaves is still being maintained, the tabloids have tipped United to swoop for three midfield members of Italy's World Cup-winning squad.

Mauro Camoranesi, Daniele de Rossi and Andrea Pirlo are all supposedly being monitored by Sir Alex Ferguson and his scouting staff, with January moves mooted.

Meanwhile, Spanish striker Fernando Torres is also still being tipped for a move to Old Trafford, but next summer is supposedly a more likely time for the transfer to materialise.

Giggs coming along nicely

Manchester United star Ryan Giggs began light jogging again on Sunday as he begins his latest comeback from hamstring trouble.

After making a superb start to the new campaign, the 32-year-old winger has been ruled out for up to a month after pulling up during the Champions League win over Celtic two weeks ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted at the time the Welshman's absence was a blow to his side and they have certainly suffered too, picking up just one point from their last two games to fall behind Premiership title favourites Chelsea.

With another international break looming, the earliest Giggs is likely to be back in action is in time for the trip to Wigan on October 14.

But, at least the Red Devils icon is making steady progress in his battle for fitness.

"Things are going okay," Giggs told MUTV. "I did some light jogging for the first time on Sunday.

"All I can do now is wait and see how the injury progresses.

Carlos Defends Under-Fire Rooney

Assistant boss Carlos Queiroz has defended striker Wayne Rooney following his below-par displays against Celtic and Arsenal.

The Portguese cites Rooney's lack of action since suffering a broken metatarsal in April as the reason for his rustiness.

?Since he got injured against Chelsea, Wayne has played seven games ? not all of them full games. So for me, he is making a natural progression in his form," he said.

"He cannot produce miracles if he has not been playing games. He needs to play more matches before can get back to his maximum."

Rooney and his team-mates face Reading this weekend as they bid to bounce back from last Sunday's home defeat to Arsenal.

As a close friend of the Royals' Irish midfielder Stephen Hunt, John O'Shea is looking forward to Saturday's game more than most.

"We used to be big rivals when we were younger," O'Shea told ManUtd.com. "I'm looking forward to coming up against him, it'll be a real flashback for us.

"He always remembers how I used to nutmeg him when we were younger and I'm sure he'll be trying to do the same to me on Saturday!"

Ronaldo happy to stay

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo insists he sees his long-term future at Old Trafford although he admits he did consider leaving in the summer.

The 21-year-old Portugal international said after the World Cup finals that he wanted to move to Real Madrid, but now says he is happy to stay with United.

"It's true I said after the World Cup I might have to leave," Ronaldo told the Sunday Mirror.

"But what I want to do is leave my mark on the club and for the fans to say I was one of the club's great players.

"I spoke to my agent and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and I took a calm decision and decided to stay.

"I really think it is the best decision but when we are hot-headed sometimes we say things we don't mean.

"Whether I will be here for another two, three, five or 10 years or until the end of my career I don't know.

"What is important is that things turned out well. I'm at Manchester and I feel very good. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world."

Reading came of age as a Premiership club as they deservedly held Manchester United to a draw at the Madejski Stadium.

United legend Steve Coppell nearly masterminded a glorious win over his former club as his Reading side led through a second-half Kevin Doyle penalty after Gary Neville had handled.

But the former Old Trafford winger was denied by a current United wide boy as Cristiano Ronaldo rescued the visitors with a superb strike 17 minutes from time.

Ronaldo brilliantly controlled a John O'Shea pass and cut inside Graeme Murty before unleashing a fierce low drive beyond the reach of Marcus Hahnemann in the Reading goal.

But Reading held on to secure a point, extending an unbeaten home run that stretches to the first day of last season.

The result had looked unlikely early on as United started at a fierce pace.Wanye Rooney's second minute shot was spilled by Hahnemann although the keeper redeemed himself by blocking the follow-up from Kieran Richardson.

But Reading composed themselves, with striker Leroy Lita looking lively as he gave United centre-back Gabriel Heinze a real headache.

The striker nearly set up Ki-Hyeon Seol with a neat low centre, although the South Korean winger could not get ahead of Heinze in time to turn the ball home.

And Reading were presented with a golden opportunity to break the deadlock on 18 minutes when Bobby Convey's flicked centre deflected into the path of Doyle, who took too long to set himself and saw his close-range effort well blocked by Edwin Van Der Sar.

The United keeper then got down well to hold a stinging low drive from Seol as Reading began to grow in confidence.

But United served several reminders of their threat, Hahnemann spilling a fierce curling free-kick from Ronaldo, and was grateful to see his defenders hack the loose ball clear.

Hahnemann redeemed himself with a tremendous fingertip flick to take the ball off Paul Scholes' toes as the midfielder seemed certain to turn in Ronaldo's low cross.

But it was Reading that made the breakthrough three minutes into the second half, with the opportunity literally handed to them by England full-back Neville.

Opposite number Murty sent over a teasing cross from the right and the ball evaded everyone before bouncing off Neville's arm, referee Peter Walton instantly pointing to the spot.

Doyle, who had missed Reading's Carling Cup shootout win over Darlington in midweek, stepped up to slam home the spot-kick, although Van der Sar got a hand to the effort before it crept into the corner.

Predictably, United hit back menacingly, Rooney pulling the ball back invitingly, only for the hapless Richardson to manage a complete air kick.

Centre-back Ivar Ingimarsson brilliantly blocked a Scholes shot when the midfielder looked destined to score, but United finally got back on level terms on 73 minutes.

Ronaldo pulled a high ball down brilliantly and had space to run at Murty before firing into the far corner with Hahnemann unable to react quickly enough.

Substitute John O'Shea might have stolen all three points for United late on, but his free header from a Michael Carrick corner was flicked away by the impressive Murty.

Reading manager Steve Coppell said: "Having got our noses in front it looked as though it was going to be one of those days where we nicked all three points.

"I'll wake up tomorrow and think it's a good point, though it was a good opportunity to push on.

"They are a fabulous footballing side and we stifled them well, to the extent that it stopped us being as creative as we can be.

"We now have another couple of big teams on the way here, so once we get to nine or 10 games we will have a better impression of where we are at.

"It's an ongoing test, and to feel satisfied after six games would be a waste.

"We had nothing to lose before the game. It was a great occasion for the club and the supporters and for the players to play against United.

"But I said to the players that I didn't want the highlight of our season to be one evening in September. There is a long way to go."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "When teams put eight in front of the box it makes things difficult.

"I haven't seen the penalty incident yet it but it was a big decision. If it had happened in the middle of the pitch it might not have been given.

"I felt Wayne Rooney was much better today and is getting sharper and back to his best.

"You have to remember that this was only his sixth game in six months and that is not a lot for a young lad. There were signs late on that he was getting tired but he is getting back to his best.

"It's a worry when you drop any points but we have a solid start to the season. Last week was a disappointment but not this, this was a good performance."

Rooney 'can be the best'

Rio Ferdinand says Wayne Rooney has got what it takes to become the greatest United player of all time - and Rooney agrees.

The defender reveals his United and England colleague's ambition to become a Reds legend in his autobiogrpahy, Rio - My Story.

"We were talking about [George] Best, Bryan Robson and [Eric] Cantona and how they were legends at United and he went, 'I'll be the best player to play for United', and smiled.

"Deep down he really does believe he is, but he's not being cocky. People can see he's so good that it's possible he will be the best United player of all time, provided he can steer clear of the unfortunate injuries."

Rio also reveals how Rooney's skills are used for slightly less serious purposes at United's Carrington training ground.

"In training we always muck about for a couple of minutes before we start properly and Wazza, like Paul Scholes, is always trying different things saying, 'I'm going to hit the crossbar from here' or 'I'm going to hit the corner flag'," he said.

"You have to be on your guard because Wazza and Scholesy will aim to knock your head off if you haven't got your wits about you."

Park upbeat after ankle op

Ji-sung Park believes he will return a stronger player following a successful operation on his injured ankle.

The Korean international damaged ligaments in training just two days before United's opening Champions League victory over Celtic and now faces just under three months on the sidelines.

However, Park remains upbeat and is focused on getting himself fit as quickly as possible.

"It is frustrating to be sidelined for such a long time, but I'm that the operation was a success," explained the 25-year-old.

"I'm clearly disappointed but I feel confident I will return stronger than ever after this injury."

If his rehabilitation progresses as planned, Park could be back for United's pre-Christmas trip to Aston Villa.

Neville wants Reds to regroup

Gary Neville says United need to regroup and embark on another winning run after suffering their first defeat of the season against Arsenal.

A run of four straight domestic wins came to an end courtesy of Emmanuel Adebayor's late strike, and club captain Neville wants his side to bounce back quickly.

"We've got to make sure we don't get too downhearted about today," Neville told MUTV. "We've had a tough week and we've now got to recover tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday and then look forward to Reading.

"We've got to win the next match. You've got to make sure when you've lost at this club that you recover quickly and go back on another run."

The Reds took maximum points from games against Tottenham and Celtic earlier this week, but Neville admits they were founding wanting at the final hurdle of a tricky period.

He said: "We knew we had three big games this week and we wanted to win all three. We failed at the last one today.

"We looked tired for some reason. Arsenal have had the same games this week so there's no reason why we should have looked in a worse state than them, but it did look like that at times and they were fresh."

Like Sir Alex Ferguson, Neville was generous in defeat and lavished praise on Arsene Wenger's side.

He said: "I think today we can't complain. We looked tired at times, didn't pass the ball well and got punished.

"We found out today that if you give the ball away in the middle of the field Arsenal are still the best at running off you and breaking quickly. We did that too many times today.

"We definitely let ourselves down with our passing. We pride ourselves on that, it's what we do all week and in every game we try to make the pitch as big as possible when we get the ball. Today our passing wasn't crisp enough, quick enough or accurate enough.

"When you've not played well and there's five minutes left you think 'a draw's not a bad result'. But we paid for our mistakes once, and once is all it needs."

There has been a report about Manchester United no1 goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar has been dropped for yesterday's defeat by Arsenal.

The Sun says United boss Sir Alex Ferguson dropped Dutch goalkeeper Van der Sar after a row. Fergie was upset with Van der Sar's after he publicly criticize United's defence after Wednesday night's 3-2 win over Celtic.

Ferguson handed a debut to Tomasz Kuszczak yesterday, who gave away and then saved an early penalty before being beaten late on by Arsenal's Adebayor. United insists Van der Sar missed the game with illness.
